Arthritis and Joint Pain

Arthritis manifests itself most commonly as joint pain, stiffness and swelling. Joint pain can be hip pain, knee pain, hand pain, wrist pain, as well as joint pain in other areas of the body. Osteoarthritis and Rheumatoid Arthritis are the most common forms of arthritis.

Osteoarthritis (OA)

is generally believed to be caused by wear and tear to the bone cartilage. It commonly affects the joints of the fingers, knees, hips, and spine. Joints of the wrists, elbows, shoulders, and ankles can also be affected but is usually due to an injury or unusual stress to that joint. Cartilage cushions the bone ends in a joint and allow it to move smoothly. When cartilage breaks down, the ends of the bones thicken and the joint may lose its normal shape. As cartilage further deteriorates, the ends of the bones may begin to rub together causing pain. In addition, damaged joint tissue can cause the release of certain substances called prostaglandins, which can also contribute to the pain and swelling.

Osteoarthritis Risk Factors:

  • Age: People aged 65 or order are at risk for Osteoarthritis. However it can also affect younger people which generally occurs due to some form of injury.
  • Female gender: Before age 45, OA occurs more frequently in men; although after age 45, OA is more common in women. OA of the hand is particularly common among women.
  • Physical labor or sports: related Joint injury or overuse also increases your risk of developing Osteoarthritis in that joint. Joints that are used repeatedly in certain jobs may be more likely to develop Osteoarthritis.
  • Obesity: The more weight the joints have to bear, the greater the chances of getting Osteoarthritis. In the knee, which is a major weight-bearing joint, being overweight during midlife or the later years is the strongest risk factor for developing OA.
  • Joint alignment: People with joints that move or fit together incorrectly, such as in bowlegs, dislocated hips, or double-jointedness, are more likely to develop OA in those joints.
  • Hereditary gene defect: A Genetic defect in a cartilage component called collagen can cause deterioration of cartilage.
  • Diseases: Some diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis, change the normal structure and function of cartilage and may increase your risk of developing Osteoarthritis.

Osteoarthritis affects 21 million adults in the US alone.

    Rheumatoid Arthritis

Rheumatoid Arthritis causes inflammation of the joint lining, which can lead to pain, swelling, stiffness, and loss of function. It also can cause inflammation of tear glands, salivary glands, the lining of your heart and lungs, and the lungs themselves.Rheumatoid Arthritis can also cause rheumatoid nodules which may form under the skin of the elbow, hands, the back of the scalp, over the knee, or on the feet and heels. They are generally painless and can be as small as a pea to as large as a walnut.

RA is an autoimmune disease. This means the body's natural immune system attacks healthy joint tissue, initiating a process of inflammation and joint damage.

General symptoms of Rheumatoid Arthritis include:

  • Joint tenderness, warmth, and swelling. Both sides of the body are usually affected at the same time also called a "symmetrical pattern" of inflammation. This is in contrast to osteoarthritis, where it is possible for only one knee to be affected.
  • Pain and stiffness lasting for more than 1 hour in the morning or after a long rest.
  • Joint inflammation in the wrist and finger joints closest to the hand
  • Fatigue, an occasional fever, and a general sense of not feeling well (called malaise).
  • Symptoms that last for an extended period of time.
  • Symptoms in other parts of the body, not just in the joints.
