Rubia cordifolia is also known as Manjishtha or Indian madder. This climbing plant has been used in Ayurveda primarily as a blood purification aid. Its principal active constituents are Purpurin, Munjistin, Xanthopurpurin and Pseudopurpurin. The roots of the plant were also originally used as it provides a natural red color that was used to dye fabrics.
Manjishtha has been traditionally used to clear skin disorders, promote normal blood pressure and blood circulation and to remove toxins.
